When applied to purchasing, sustainable development aims to select goods and services that have the most favorable impact on the environment and that are provided in compliance with the highest social, ethical and environmental standards.  

Until recently, the role of the Purchasing Function within a business was to guarantee that suppliers deliver goods and services of the highest quality, on time and at the best price. Today, in a world that is becoming ever more global at an ever more rapid pace, and in light of the differences in social and environmental regulations at the local level, buyers can no longer ignore the ecological impact of the goods and services they purchase, nor the manner in which they were produced or provided with regard to social, ethical and environmental issues.

Sanofi-aventis works in the field of human health and purchases goods and services for a value of 12 billion euros each year. Sanofi-aventis would like to share with all its suppliers the fundamental principles of the Global Compact as well as the Group's values.
