Indexes and ratings

The rating agencies rate companies according to social, environmental, economic and corporate governance criteria.
Using these criteria, they determine what "level of responsibility" the company demonstrates in terms of sustainability. Since there is no standardized method, each agency has developed its own rating system.
These ratings are mainly used by investors and asset managers to build socially responsible funds.

In 2007, sanofi-aventis entered one of the most important sustainable index, the  Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. Sanofi-aventis is also a member of several key indexes such as FTSE4Good or A.S.P.I.

Key non-financial indexes overview

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index

Sanofi-aventis entered in 2007 the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (D.J.S.I World). The D.J.S.I World, created in 1999, is the index of ethical securities selected from the New York Stock Exchange.

From among the largest market capitalizations, the D.J.S.I selects the companies with the best sustainability performance as rated by the Swiss company SAM (Sustainable Asset Management).

The FTSE4Good

FTSE4Good is a series of socially responsible indexes launched in 2001 by the FTSE (Financial Times Stock Exchange). The companies included in this index were selected by the British extra-financial research company EIRIS (Ethical Investment Research Service) using three criteria: environment/sustainable development, stakeholder relations and human rights. Sanofi-aventis is a member of the FTSE4Good since it was created.

ASPI Eurozone

The ASPI Eurozone® (Advanced Sustainable Performance Indices) index is one of the benchmark European indexes for companies and investors which have included sustainable development in their business strategy. The companies included in the ASPI index are selected on the basis of evaluations conducted by Vigeo, a French environmental and social rating agency. In total, the sectoral distribution of the 120 companies of the index is close to that of the index of reference in relation to the quoted companies. Since the Vigeo method of notation does not favour any economic sector, the distribution of ratings awarded by Vigeo remains much the same from one sector to another.

The sustainable commitment of sanofi-aventis is recognized by Vigeo through the ASPI Eurozone since the index was created.
